Is Toluna a Scam? What You Should Know About This Survey Site
If you are looking to make some extra bucks by taking paid surveys at Toluna, you should read my review first. Toluna is not all its cracked up to be and honestly I do not recommend it as a paid survey site.
Is Toluna a scam? No.. I wouldn’t go that far as to say that. But I will say that they are not all that trustworthy either, at least from what I have seen. In this review I’ll be covering a few important things that you should know about this place so you can make a more informed decision on whether or not you want to sign up with them.
Toluna Survey Review
- Name: Toluna
- Website: toluna.com
- Cost: Free to Join
- Recommended?: No, more on this later
Don’t get me wrong here, Toluna is a legitimate company and you can legitimately make money taking surveys online through them. They do have some good to offer, but overall I just think there are better options.
In this review I will first be covering some general things about Toluna, such as how it all works, how you get paid…. then I’ll be getting into the negative aspects and why I would NOT join.
How It All Works
Its pretty simple… you can sign up for Toluna for free. That is the first step of the process. Next you will be able to participate in surveys that are offered to you. These surveys range from around 10-25 minutes and pay you in points, which you then can redeem for cash and other rewards.
Toluna is a market research company. The reason that they pay people to take surveys is because they want consumer opinions. Major companies like Pepsi, Apple, and just about every other big company out there pay market research companies like Toluna to gather consumer opinions.
So big companies pay Toluna to gather the research, and Toluna pays you a small amount as some incentive to complete surveys.
How Much Will You Make?
The answer to this is sad…. not much at all. The industry standard when it comes to paying survey takers has decreased drastically over the years. This is because it is so easy for survey companies like Toluna to gather opinions for extremely low prices. So there is no need for them to pay more because people are taking the surveys even with the low payouts.
How Much Do The Surveys Pay
The surveys will pay you in points, which can then be redeemed for money and other things of real value.
These surveys are one a broad range of topics and could be about health, your lifestyle, foods, new products, entertainment, traveling, etc.
The length of these surveys vary from 5-30 minutes approximately. And you can generally expect to earn 1,000 to 3,000 points.
Below are some of the surveys that I had available in my account. As you can see the shortest survey is just 5 minutes and pays out 1,200 points and the longest survey is 30 minutes and pays out 3,000 points. This is usually how it works… the longer surveys pay more.
All of the survey shown above are what you can generally expect with Toluna. They are your normal surveys.
But how much are these surveys really worth? To answer that you have to look at the rewards that you are able to cash out your point for, which have real cash value.
How Much Is a Point Worth?
The minimum cash out amount is 30,000 points, which will get you a $10 gift card. In order to cash out via Paypal you are going to need 90,000 points which will equate to $30. And if you want a $25 check you will need 75,000 points.
This means that 3,000 points = $1
And since a normal 20-30 minute survey (most common length) is going to give you 2,000-3,000 points, this means that you are going to be making way below minimum wage. You are literally going to be making $2-$6/hr with the surveys they offer.
What Are The Rewards?
As mentioned above, you can cash out once you reach 30,000 points for a $10 gift card. They have gift cards for Amazon, Walmart, Dell, Starbucks, and a bunch other places.
If you want cold hard cash you are going to have to reach either 75,000 points to get a check in the mail, or reach 90,000 points to get $30 of Paypal cash sent to your account.
Besides these rewards Toluna also has sweepstakes that you will be entered to win $4,500, which they give away monthly. But don’t count on winning this.
You can also enter to win “gifties”, which are gifts that include gadgets, treats, board games, magazine subscriptions, and a bunch of other random prizes.
Besides making an extremely low amount of money, there are some other common complaints that people have as well as I have.
Getting Screened Out
When taking surveys you will NOT qualify for every survey that you try. It is not unusual to get “screened out” when you are in the middle of taking a survey because they all of a sudden determine that you are not the type of person that they are looking for.
This is frustrating and wastes you time.
Takes Forever To Get Paid
Toluna is notorious for taking an insanely long time to pay members. They even state on their website that it may take up to 8 weeks for them to process and for you to get your rewards.
What the heck? 8 weeks!!!?
Luckily if you choose to get Paypal payments or e-gift cards it is usually much much faster.
Account Shut Down For No Reason
There have also been multiple complaints about this that I have found online. It seems that some people that do really well and really have a lot of points all of a sudden find that their accounts have been shut down due to terms of service violation.
The kicker is that no specific violation is referenced and they cannot get in contact with Toluna support.
If you are having problems with your account, didn’t receive a reward, or need support for any other reason you might as well just give up.
Trying to get support from Toluna (or pretty much any paid survey site for that matter), is like pulling teeth. Its like they purposely avoid it.
Final Thoughts & What I Recommend
Honestly I do not recommend Toluna, or any online paid survey site for that matter. The pay is just so little for the amount of time you put into taking the surveys and all the time you waste getting screened out of surveys. The only time I would ever recommend a site like this is if you are really bored and are looking for way to pass time.
However, if you are interested in earning pocket change taking paid surveys, then I suggest SwagBucks over Toluna. SwagBucks makes everything a little more fun, giving you the chance to earn money playing games, watching videos, searching the web, taking surveys, and more.
But like I said, I don’t really recommend any paid survey site. They just don’t pay much at all and there are better ways to make money online with your spare time.
I make a living working online for myself and I sure as heck am not going around taking paid surveys. I have written a post on what I do to make money online, how it all works, and how others can do the same. You can click the link below to read about it.
