Is Giving Assistant a Scam? My Take On It
If you do a lot of your shopping online and are looking to save some money, Giving Assistant is a place worth looking into. But should you trust this place? Or is Giving Assistant a scam that is going to just be a waste of your time?
If you have read any of my posts before then you probably know that I love trying out new ways to not only make money online, but also to save money online. When I heard that Giving Assistant could actually give me money back on my online purchases, which include just about all of my purchases, I knew I had to take a look into it. In this short review I’ll be going over how it all works, how much money you can get back, some downsides to it, and ultimately whether or not I think its a scam and worth your time.
Giving Assistant Review
- Website: givingassistant.org
- Type: Cashback site
- Cost: Free to join
- Legit?: Yes
Giving Assistant is a cashback website (similar to Mr. Rebates) that anyone can join and earn cashback on online purchases at around 3,000 online stores and brands. They have agreements with these online sellers and receive money for sending paying customers to them.
So when you shop at a store that Giving Assistant refers you to, they get paid from the place you shopped at, Giving Assistant then goes and gives you that money back. What makes this place really nice is that they give you 100% of the money back (so they claim) and make it easy for you to donate to charity. With all the cash you get back you can choose what percentage of it you want to go to where.
But you don’t have to donate if you don’t want to. You can choose to receive your money yourself.
How It Works
Giving Assistant is all online. So how it works in order to get cashback is you would have to go to their website and then go to the store you want to shop at through there. If you just go to the store you are going to shop at first you won’t receive credit and will not get cashback.
There is a free browser extension that they have that will notify you when you are on a cashback site which is a nice little addition. This way you don’t really have to go to their site. You can just shop around online like you normally do and if the store you are at is one of the sites they are partnered with you will be alerted and be able to get cashback.
Once you get the cashback in your account you will be able to withdrawal it when your balance reaches $5.99. Its as simple as that.
Store You Can Shop At
There is no shortage of stores you can shop at to get cashback. Walmart, Macy’s, Forever 21, Amazon, AliExpress, Hotels.com, the list goes on… Here is a screenshot of some of the featured stores you can shop at…
How Much Money Can You Get Back?
As you can see above, the amount you get back will generally be around 5% and below. But you can make a lot more than that sometimes. If you look around you will find that some stores offer 10%+ cashback. These are usually the lesser known smaller online stores however, so you are less likely to have the need to shop there.
All in all, even if you are getting just a small amount of cash back I still think its decent money. You have to remember that you were going to do the shopping regardless. So its like free money the way I see it.
Also, at Giving Assistant you can get coupons for many different stores online. You can get coupons and cashback at the same time and this can save you a lot.
Just to give you an example… here are some of the current deals you can get … As you can see some big retailers are giving 40% off on purchases.
Once you get $5.99 in your account you can cash out via paypal or echeck. I would suggest using PayPal just because you will get your money a lot faster. But it can still take a while since Giving Assistant has to first wait until the store pays them before they pay you. They tell you that this can take up to 90 days potentially but it is rare that it would take this long.
Is Giving Assistant a Scam?
The only reason I ask this question is because I know a lot of people are asking it. But no, its definitely not a scam. This site is legit as it gets and is definitely one of the better cashback sites out there.
They give you money for free basically… how can that possibly be a scam? In addition to this they also help out with charity. Not only do they make it very easy for members to donate, but they also give out meals to charity as well.
Final Thoughts & What I Recommend
Do I recommend Giving Assistant? Yes I do. Its a great cashback site and you can get a lot of great deals with no hassle at all. It takes about 30 seconds to sign up and you can start getting money back right away. I also really like how they seem to be focused on giving forward rather than just making a lot of money.
So if you do a lot of online shopping and want to save some money give this place a try. Also, if you are looking to get cashback for your grocery shopping then read my review of Ibotta here. This is my favorite cashback app for grocery shopping in-store.
